The updater will not update any 1.x versions. Virtual PC 1.x users should contact Connectix sales for upgrade information.
Update Instructions for Windows 95/98 and IBM® PC DOS 7
Windows 95 or Windows 98
1. Run the Virtual PC™ 2.1.3 Updater to update the Virtual PC 2.x application to 2.1.3. The updater will prompt you to locate your Virtual PC 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.1.1 or 2.1.2 application on your hard drive and then update the application.
If you have multiple copies of Virtual PC, you will be prompted to select which version to update. Run the updater for each copy of Virtual PC.
If you are updating Virtual PC 2.1.2, the update process is complete.
If you are updating version 2.1.1 follow this additional instruction:
2. Run the Hard Drive Expander Updater to update the HD Utility (1.0) or Hard Drive Expander (2.0) to version 2.1.2. A new Hard Drive Expander will be installed and the old copy will be moved to the trash.
If you are updating from version 2.0, 2.0.1 or 2.1 and are using Windows 95/98, follow these additional instructions:
3. After the update is complete, launch Virtual PC 2.1.3. Once in Windows 95/98, make sure you are running in window mode (you can toggle the screen mode to "window" mode by pressing Command-M.)
4. Drag the file "VPC211AD.EXE" to the Windows desktop.
5. Double-click the "VPC211AD" (VPC211AD.EXE) icon.
Note: If you can't see the Mac desktop in "window" mode, set the screen size for Windows 95/98 one size smaller than the Mac screen size. (example: set the Mac to 832 x 624 and Windows 95/98 to 640 x 480).
Note: If the following message appears when dragging the "Update" to the PC desktop: "An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered. The PC will reset now", you have encountered an incompatibility with the shell extension feature of WinZip and Virtual PC 2.0.x's drag and drop feature.
This has been fixed in Virtual PC 2.1. or later. If you're updating from 2.0 or 2.0.1 you'll need to turn off the shell extension feature of WinZip until you've fully updated to version 2.1.3
To turn off the shell extension: launch the WinZip application, choose the "Options" menu, then choose "Explorer Configuration..." and uncheck "Explorer Shell Extension".
Note: If you have multiple hard drive images you should update each drive.
IBM® PC DOS 7
1. Run the Virtual PC™ 2.1.3 Updater to update the Virtual PC 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.1.1 or 2.1.2 application to 2.1.3. The updater will prompt you to locate your Virtual PC 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.1.1 or 2.1.2 application on your hard drive and then update the application.
If you have multiple copies of Virtual PC, you will be prompted to select which version to update. Run the updater for each copy of Virtual PC.
If you are updating Virtual PC 2.1.2, the update process is complete.
If you are updating version 2.1.1 follow this additional instruction:

Added support for the Imation USB SuperDisk, Newer Technology uDrive and VST USB floppy drives. Floppy disks inserted into these drives will be accessible in the Virtual PC A: drive.
Hard Drive Expander 2.1.2:
The Hard Drive Expander can now detect if a hard drive image is part of a saved state. Drive images in a saved state cannot be expanded.
Virtual PC 2.1 includes Voodoo2 support. The drivers for the original 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics card and the new Voodoo2 card are included on the Extras for Voodoo2 drive image (separate download).
Virtual PC 2.1 allows user-selectable ethernet devices. This option will be shown in the Virtual PC Preferences dialog. The preference box will only have the ability to choose a card/built-in when more than one ethernet device is actually available.
Support for hot-swapping PowerBook floppy and CD-ROM drives is now provided. Virtual PC 2.1 now reports to the operating system that a CD-ROM and floppy device is present at all times.
• On Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) machines with the ATI Rage 128 video card, a freeze will occur when dragging a folder or disk image to the toolbar (the buttons at the bottom of the Virtual PC window). As a workaround, share folders by way of the Virtual PC preference dialog (from the Edit menu). When using the floppy image feature, disable the ATI Graphics Accelerator extension with the Extensions Manager and restart. After finishing the VPC session, remember to turn the ATI Graphics Accelerator extension back on and restart in able to get the fastest performance from the ATI video card. Connectix is aware of the problem and is working with Apple and ATI to resolve this issue. The date for a release of a fix is unknown.
• When using Mac OS 8.5 and Virtual PC, you may experience crashing or freezing when printing to PostScript printers with desktop printing enabled. Connectix is aware of the problem and is working with Apple to resolve this issue. The date for a release of a fix is unknown. Until that time, we recommend disabling desktop printing.
Using the Extensions Manager, disable the following extensions:
Desktop Printer Spooler
Desktop PrintMonitor
If you do not experience this problem, you may leave this feature enabled.
• Allocating more memory to Virtual PC than is physically available (using virtual memory or RAM Doubler) may cause Virtual PC to crash. Connectix is investigating this problem.
• Virtual PC is incompatible with Windows NT Service Pack 4 . Connectix is investigating this problem.
• Apple machines and some third party ethernet cards cannot log on to Novell server when using a DOS client (Windows 95/NT client works fine on the same machine). Workarounds: Access the server from Windows or if the server has AppleTalk services installed, mount the Novell volume on the Mac and share the volume via Virtual PC's folder sharing.
• PowerMac 6500's can't access any Novell server (DOS or Windows). Workaround: If the server has AppleTalk services installed, mount the Novell volume on the Mac and share the volume via Virtual PC's folder sharing.
• InfoWave's PowerPrint 4.5.1 or later is no longer compatible with Virtual PC. Connectix is investigating this problem.
• Intech's CD-ROM SpeedTools™ : holding down the "Option" key while inserting a CD will mount all non-HFS partitions. These partition formats include: ISO, High Sierra and all other ISO hybrids.
• Some programs that use their own modem drivers instead of the built-in Windows 95/98 drivers will return a "carrier not detected" message.
Fixed a bug introduced in 2.1.2 that prevented the use of the left floppy bay on PowerBooks that support this feature.
Fixed in 2.1.2:
Improved handling of the Finder's desktop icons when switching from full screen to window mode. Repositioning may still occur, but less frequently.
The Mac's control strip is now hidden in full screen mode.
When quitting Virtual PC, the AppleCD Audio Player's volume is restored to the previous level.
Drag and drop now works in full-screen mode with two monitors.
Added a work-around for a MacOS 8.5 bug that causes Virtual PC to draw to the Macintosh
desktop after hiding Virtual PC from the application menu.
Fixed a bug with TeleChart 2000 that would not allow it to launch properly (runtime error).
Modem issues still exist, and we recommend connecting with the internet option to update data (TeleChart 2000 4.1 or later).
Fixed a bug that caused crashes within Windows software including Visual Basic and Electronic Money.
Fixed several serial port emulation bugs.
If a drive image is part of a saved state Virtual PC now puts up a dialog asking if the drive image should be mounted as a read-only disk. This prevents corruption of the hard drive image.
Fixed in 2.1.1:
The emulated clock chip in Virtual PC now understands leap years. This is generally not an issue because Virtual PC Windows 95/98 integration constantly synchronizes itself to Macintosh time, as does Virtual PC every time you launch it. Also, both DOS and Win 95/98/NT explicitly work around this behavior. Now Y2K testing programs that test either the BIOS (which just reads the clock chip) or the clock chip directly report correctly under Virtual PC 2.1.1.
Virtual PC now works with self-modifying code in certain Y2K testing programs.
Corrected a problem with Fshare32.vxd (version 2.1) where data was being sent to the COM ports when sharing Macintosh folders or drag and drop was being utilized. This could cause interruptions to programs using the COM ports and in some cases report the modem in use.
Fixed in 2.1:
Improved compatibility with virtual memory and RAM Doubler.
Fixed a problem with After Dark (Macintosh), where users were unable to enter a password or access file menus while Virtual PC is running.
Fixed problems with the Kensington mouse/track ball devices. Users no longer need to move the mouse to activate the right click menu.
Dual-format CD's now mount correctly when using FWB Toolkit. You must insert the CD after launching Virtual PC. If the CD is mounted on the Mac desktop and then Virtual PC is launched the CD will not be accessible under Windows/DOS.
Fixed a problem with formatting locked floppies. Virtual PC will now return an error message that the floppy is locked in the correct sequence.
Virtual PC will now properly format floppies that are formatted in succession.
Fixed 4-bit (16 color) video mode problems.

Virtual PC 2.0.1 addresses problems with networks using 802.3 frame types.
Virtual PC 2.0.1 includes CDROM.SYS version 2.0.1. This CDROM driver fixes a problem which prevented Mortal Kombat III, among others, from installing properly.
Virtual PC 2.0.1 includes a new SYSINI.EXE to remove duplicate "C:\CNTX\FSHARE32.VXD" system.ini entries.
